capslock

HI. WELL WE’RE EARLY FOR SOME AND LATE FOR OTHERS. BUT LET’S REFLECT ON THIS YEAR’S CAPS LOCK DAY.

I’ve always had a strong opinion on the issues surround CAPS. Email, chat, and forum people call it SHOUTING, and frankly it does read loud and harsh. But CAPS are better, in almost every instance, for design. Take a look around you… what do you see? CAPS! Right? Look at the street sign, your tin of mints, a map, books, album covers: ALL CAPS. On that latter item, it reminds me all songs should be in caps so I don’t have to differentiate “STARS ON FIRE” from “Stars on Fire.” Just look at any old 45 and you see them again, CAPS CAPS CAPS.

Title Case Has Its Place. And for internet talking you generally want to go mixed case. But lest we never shun the UPPER CASE, the full proof, traditional, authoritative case. It’s the Helvetica of cases really. Let’s see some TOLERANCE out there.

Final note: all lowercase case is the lamest style of type and should never appear.
